With a disappointing loss to first place Good Counsel and a frustrating tie with St Johns in the books, Bishop Ireton readies for their conference regular season-ender at Paul VI Tuesday.
The Falcons visited on Tuesday and quickly established themselves as the team to beat as Coach Jim Bruno’s squad scored their first goal in the game’s opening ten minutes and rolled to a 3-0 halftime advantage. They rolled to a 5-1 win, solidifying their hold on the WCAC’s top spot.
Friday saw the Cardinals visit St John’s on senior day. Bishop Ireton drew first blood, only to see the Cadets bounce back to tie the contest. Ireton regained the lead only to see the home team rebound to again tie the match.
Lilly Weber and Grace Hersey each scored a goal for the Cardinals, each earned an assist on the other’s goal.
“We had so many chances to put them away.” lamented Coach Gino Leon, “we had ten opportunities to score and couldn’t do it. They just kept hanging around and that’s what can happen. Frustrating…”
The Cardinals, 4-1-2, (14 points) are locked in a tie with Bishop O’Connell going into Friday’s action in second place behind Good Counsel, 5-0-1 (16 points). Holy Cross at 3-0-3 (12 points) and St Johns 3-2-1 (10 points) lurk just behind waiting for an opportunity to move up.
Ireton faces Paul VI 1-5 Tuesday in Fairfax while O’Connell hosts Good Counsel. Holy Cross and St Johns will tangle so the week ahead, promising fans an exciting conclusion to a regular season of soccer.
