The Cardinals return home after a pair of big wins on the road for the first of three straight at Fannon Field, beginning with New York powerhouse, Brighton.

The Bishop Ireton girls’ lacrosse team went on the road late last week and overwhelmed WCAC opponent St. John’s 18-4 in Washington, D.C., on Friday, April 11. The Cardinals traveled south on Saturday, April 12, to Richmond, VA, where they beat the always tough Collegiate School Cougars 15-7.

Ireton came away with a decisive victory over St. John’s due to a balanced scoring attack, a near stranglehold on draw controls, and a solid defensive effort. The Cardinals’ systematically picked apart the Cadets with superior passing, quick feet, and rapid, precise shots.

BI led 5-1 only eight minutes after the first draw and 12-2 at halftime. Charlotte Sofield led the scoring attack with five goals-two assists; Kelly Mathews had four goals-one assist; Kayla Marshall got three goals-two assists; Kayla Duperrouzel notched three goals-one assist; Kelly Larkin had one goal-three assists; Kaitlin Luzik got one goal-one assist; and Maggie Wiltsie had one goal. In goal, Olivia Cole had five saves and Amelia Cole had three saves.

BI’s win over the Collegiate  Cougars turned on patience, not committing fouls, sharp passing, and draw-control domination. BI led 4-1 after the first 11 minutes of the game and was up 8-4 at halftime. This included two quick goals with less than one minute left before halftime.

Bishop Ireton’s patient offensive strategy chewed up the time clock as the Cardinals looked for the right openings to strike hard and fast throughout the game. Mathews got five goals-one assist; Sofield had four goals-three assists; Larkin notched two goals-two assists; Kendall Cunningham got two goals; Dupperouzel had one goal-one assist; Luzik had one goal; and Maggie Lohrer got one assist. Olivia Cole had nine saves.

Bishop Ireton is now 5-1 in the WCAC and 9-1 overall. The Cardinals continue to be well placed in the national polls—Nike/US Lacrosse (#12); LaxPower.com (CCR 88.90—#4); and the StudentSports.com FAB 50 (#9).
