Junior Nick Schmelzer again led the Cardinals in scoring.

The Cardinals fell to the St. John’s on Wednesday, 73-48, even with Nick Schmelzer scoring 13 points.

Bishop Ireton battled the visiting Cadets nearly evenly for the game’s first 16 minutes, trailing 30-25 by the half.  But, it was a big third quarter by the red-jerseyed Washington, DC school that put the Cardinals in  a hole from which they would not recover.

St John’s came out of the locker room to outscore Ireton 20-10 in the third  to take a 50-35 lead into the final quarter and continued to pull away with a 25-point final period.

Junior Nick Schmelzer shot well from the field, making 50% (3-for-6) of shots attempted as well as 60% (3-for-5) of threes attempted. He also shot well from the line, making 80% (4-for-5) of free throws attempted.

Also helping the effort for the Cardinals were Jamie Pasha (7 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals), Jeremy Guillaud (6 points, 7 rebounds, 1 steal), Quintin Gilchrest (5 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal), Michael Everett (5 points, 2 rebounds, 1 block), Darius Hines (5 points, 2 rebounds, 1 steal), Kyle Bethea (3 points), Joshua Cordoba (2 points) and Andrew Dihn (2 points, 1 rebound).  The Cardinals finished the game with 29 rebounds (eight offensive/21 defensive), one block and six steals.

Maryland-bound Anthony Cowan led all scorers with 19 points, junior Kylia Sykes added 18.

Cardinals hit the road to play Gonzaga on Friday night before returning to Godley Gym for their final regular season contest with Archbishop Carroll.
