Bishop Ireton’ cheerleading squad scored a “three-peat” at the Mid-Atlantic regional CCA with its first place finish in the large varsity competition, coupled with the grand championship victory scoring the highest out of every division in the competition on Saturday at the CCA Regionals competition in Richmond.
“God just continues to bless us! The team was on fire and they really did a spectacular job!!” said a happy Coach Angela Hope-Eskew, on her third regional win in her three years at Bishop Ireton.
“They overcome a lot of obstacles just to get to the regionals,” added the athletic director, Bill Simmons. “With the limited facilities that we have; six basketball teams, a wrestling team, and a competitive cheer squad, they end up practicing late in the gym, or in the cafeteria, or in the auditorium, or on the field, or in the parking lot……I am very proud that they just adapt and overcome. It would be easy to focus on what they don’t have or can’t get, but they just work hard with what they have and produce championship results. That too is one of those ‘life lessons’ we talk about so much at school.”
With the win, the Cardinal cheerleaders qualify for the Christian Cheerleading Association’s national championship competition in Charlotte, NC on March 3-5. The squad topped over 11 of cheer squads from Virginia and Maryland. The girls will compete next at the CCA Classics Competition in Lynchburg, VA. on February 5th , but return to Ireton to demonstrate their award-winning talents as the Cardinals host three basketball games in the coming week in Godley Gym.
